The Solheim Cup takes place this month at the world-famous PGA Centenary course at Gleneagles in Perthshire. Hosting this prestigious competition for women in golf has put Scotland back into the golfing spotlight for 2019. The event returns to Scotland, having been held here on two previous occasions. Gleneagles will host the competition for the first time, after the success of hosting the Ryder Cup back in 2014. The team match-play competition features the best European players from the Ladies European Tour and the best U.S. players from the Ladies Professional Golf Association Tour. All eyes are sure to be on Scotland, watching golfers of the highest standard competing in the picturesque Perthshire hills.

Designing the Tartan

Our friends at VisitScotland commissioned our Tartan Design Services to mark the 16th edition of the biggest event for women in golf. Designed and woven here at Lochcarron of Scotland, the tartan weaves together two renowned symbols of Scotland - tartan and golf - in a celebration of the Solheim Cup 2019.

Blue, Red and White Tartan weaving on loom

The bright Solheim Cup tartan features blue, red, yellow and white. The colours represent the Saltire flag and both the U.S and European flags. Historically, tartan could include different clan colours in a representation of a union between two clans. Our design, seen here on the loom, represents unity between the opposing teams - capturing the spirit behind what is sure to be a world class competition.

Unveiling the Solheim Cup Tartan

Registered on the Scottish Register of Tartans, the Solheim Cup tartan was unveiled in January 2019, when European captain Catriona Matthew, together with Scotland’s Minister for Public Health, Sport and Wellbeing, Joe Fitzpatrick, visited us here in Selkirk, in the Scottish Borders. Catriona and Joe embarked on a Mill Tour for a behind the scenes look at how we manufacture over 700 tartans. Our guests also met Rebecca Ferguson, from our in house design team, who designed the beautiful Solheim Cup tartan, pictured below.

Catriona and Joe witnessed first hand the craftsmanship that makes Lochcarron of Scotland the world's leading manufacturer of tartan. Following the tour they were presented with the official Solheim Cup tartan by our Managing Director, Dawn Robson-Bell, pictured above.

Since the tartan’s creation, it has been incorporated into outfits for the European team! It will be thrilling to see flashes of tartan on the course and on the side-lines at this exciting event. The tartan will be available to purchase as Solheim Cup Official Merchandise for those attending the Cup. Matthews has called upon fans of the European team to wear tartan in support of the team on Friday 13th September with the hashtag #tartanfriday, read more about #tartanfriday here.

Here at Lochcarron we are very proud to be playing a part in welcoming the Solheim Cup to Scotland. We wish both teams all the best ahead of the competition! We're so looking forward to seeing The Solheim Cup Official tartan present on players and spectators alike.
