This wonderful tartan is helping to raise funds and awareness for Motor Neurone Disease and we are honoured to have been a stepping stone on its road to completion.
The Tartan showcases four bright and bold colours, each close to Doddie and his outstanding career. Blue and White representing his homeland and team for whom he was capped 61 times. Black and Yellow for Melrose Rugby Club, where Doddie played his first games as an amateur senior player. Black and White for Newcastle Falcons where the talented Lock Forward spent some of his career.
Melrose Sevens, this weekend, will parade the tartan in splendid fashion as the tournament’s ball boys will be donning their very own Doddie Weir Tartan Caps.
Melrose in the Scottish Borders is always inundated with visitors who have travelled far and wide to be part of the annual Melrose Rugby Sevens Tournaments.
Open to thousands of fans and broadcast to thousands more on the television this annual event is a key in the Rugby calendar.
This year the tournament is set to raise awareness for one of its former players, Doddie Weir. Last June, the ex-Scotland player revealed that he has been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. As one of the most talented sports personalities Scotland has known, Doddie is about to face the biggest challenge of his life. Not only keeping himself well but raising awareness and funds in order to support further research into this currently incurable disease.
