The origin of the name is from the small parish of Abercromby in Fife. The lands and title were given to a supporter of Edward I of England in 1296, who became William de Abercromby, suggesting a Norman origin, and is the earliest known descendant of the Abercrombies of that Ilk. This lineage of the family died off in the 17th century and is now represented by the Abercrombies of Birkenbog in Baniffshire, who became baronets in 1636.
