Cape Breton Canadian

This tartan was named after the small island of Cape Breton, part of the province of Nova Scotia in Canada. The inspiration behind the tartan was from a poem celebrating the island, written by Lillian Crewe Walsh of Glace Bay, Cape Breton. The tartan was designed by Elizabeth Grant in 1957, with the chosen colours corresponding to those in the poem: black to represent their coal mines, grey for steel, green to signify their soaring mountains, valleys, and fields, and gold for the sunset glowing over the lakes of Bras d’Or.
