Chattan Ancient

This clan was formed by a confederation of Clans - orginally composed of the MacIntoshes, Davidsons, MacPgersons, MacGillivrays and MacBeans and later also included the Farquharsons. Gillichattan Mor is said to have been the first chief of the clan. His daughter, and only offspring, Eva, married Angus, 6th Laird of MacIntosh in 1291. The Laird of MacIntosh thus became Captain of Clan Chattaan. For over 200 years the Clans of MacIntosh and MacPherson competed for the chieftainship of Clan Chattan and in 1672 Cluny MacPherson offically claimed the Chieftainship of Clan Chattan: this however was successfully protested by the Chief of Clan MacIntosh. It was in 1947 that Duncan Alexander Eliot MacIntosh was granted the Arms of the Clan Chattan by the Lord Lyon. Badge - Red Whortleberry.
