This Aberdeenshire clan is descended from Farquhar, son of Shaw of Rothiemurchus, and was a member of the great Clan Chattan Confederation of Clans. The Farquharsons had a long record of service to their country and participated in many historic battles, including Pinkie in 1547, when Finlay Mor of Invercauld was killed. During the two Jacobite Risings they supported, and fought for, the House of Stewart, and during the Rising of 1745, 300 of the clan served in Prince Charlie's army. Ann Farquharson, wife of the Mackintosh of Mackintosh, was an ardent Jacobite and in 1746 helped to save Prince Charlie's life by her strategy in planning the "Rout of Moy".
