Hannay Ancient

Hannay is a lowland Scottish clan that resided in Sorbie in Galloway, South-West Scotland and can be traced back to the 12th century. The earliest known landowners were the Viponts, recorded as Lords of Westmoreland, who received the lands and manor of Sorbie in 1185. During this period, the name A’Hannay began to emerge in records, eventually replacing the name Viponts. The Hannay tartan was recorded as the official clan Hannay tartan in 1984. The oldest sample of the Hannay tartan can be traced back to the late Eighteenth Century in the form of an old kilt which was worn by Commander Alex Hannay (1788-1844).
