Ramsay Blue Ancient

This family are of Anglo-Norman origin and were in the Lothians in the 12th century. They took a prominent part in Border warfare. George Ramsay of Dalhousie was created Lord Ramsay of Melrose in 1618, but shortly afterwards the title was changed to Lord Ramsay of Dalhousie. The 2nd Lord Ramsay became Earl of Dalhousie in 1633. The 5th Earl was Colonel of the Scots Guards when that body fought for the Archduke Charles of Austria during the War of the Spanish Succession. The 10th Earl, created Marquis in 1849, was Governor-General of India from 1847 to 1858.
