Scrimgeour Ancient

The name Scrymgeour derives from the old French word for swordsman, ‘Schyrmeshur’. During the wars of independence, this clan were supporters of William Wallace and were established as banner bearers by William Wallace in 1298. In the same year, Alexander Scrymgeour was granted Constable of Dundee Castle and given lands of Upper Dudhope. He was appointed standard bearer and fought alongside William Wallace at Falkirk. In 1370, a vast amount of land in Argyll came to the Scrimgeour family when Alexander Skrymsher/Scrimgeour married Agnes, heiress to Gilbert Glassary of the Ilk. This tartan was originally designed in 1971 by Trudi Mann and later adopted as the official Scrimgeour tartan.
