The Young tartan was designed by Derek Young, Benderloch, Oban, in 1992. The design was inspired by an arisaid plaid dating back to 1726, which was spun, dyed and woven by Christina Young. It is believed to be one of the oldest and most completely preserved specimens of homespun hand-looming. The Young tartan features the purple, yellow and orange box check of the original motif, but with the ground colour incorporating the traditional greens and blues of the west coast of Scotland. It is thought that the Young families settled in the Borders area during the reign of David I of Scotland (1124 – 1153), often found in the Middle March area.
