Arbuthnot Ancient

Arbuthnot is a lowland clan that originates from the ancient lands of Arbuthnot in Kincardineshire. The lands were received by Osbert Olifard ‘The Crusader’ from William the Lion, King of Scotland (1165 to 1214) in around 1175, the family later adopted the name Arbuthnot. The first record of the surname was Philip de Arbuthnott in 1355. The clan’s most infamous moment came around 1420 when Phillip’s son Hugh was part of a gang implicated in the murder of the local sheriff John Melville of Glenbervie. The Arbuthnot tartan pattern is based on the Black Watch design.
