Burnett Weathered

The Burnett family first came to Scotland, settling in Roxburghshire, when King David I of Scotland returned from England. During the Wars of Scottish Independence, Alexander Burnard was a supporter of Robert the Bruce. In 1323, following the Battle of Bannockburn, he was rewarded for his services with a grant of land in Banchory on the Banks of the River Dee in Aberdeenshire. For some time, he was named the keeper of the neighbouring Royal Forest of Drum. His descendants, the Burnett family of Leys gave rise to multiple branches in north-east Scotland. Their seat was the 16th-century tower house Crathes Castle.
