Carmichael Ancient
This family takes its name from the Barony of Carmichael in Lanarkshire where they were in possession of lands in the 13th century. John Carmichael was appointed Bishop of Orleans by the King of France in recognition of the services of the Scots in France during the 15th century. In France he was known as Jean de St Michel. The surname Carmichael is still fairly common in Lanarkshire. In the Highlands it is found in Lismore and in other islands on the West Coast. Alexander Carmichael, translator of "Carmna Gadelica" was a well known Highlander who did much to record and preserve Highland folklore.
