The MacLaines of Lochbuie are descended from Hector, brother of the progenitor of the MacLeans of Duart. Charters confirming their ownership of their lands were granted by King James IV. In a dispute with MacLean of Duart, the chief's son lost possession of his lands, but later regained them. The MacLaines were staunch supporters of the Royal Stuarts and fought for them under the Marquis of Montrose, and at Killiecrankie under Viscount Dundee. The MacLeans of Dochgarroch, near Inverness, are descended from Charles, son of Hector, the founder of the Lochbuie MacLaines.
